Research checked 5 October 2026. Practical recommendations below are Divel’s editorial guidance; examples are illustrative.
A useful video can lose context when its title, creator and page description disagree. For businesses publishing demonstrations, interviews or explainers, metadata maintenance is part of keeping the content understandable.
What Google updated
On September 24, 2026, Google documented the creator property, noted support for author and clarified interactionStatistic types for VideoObject structured data. This is a specific documentation update, not a promise that adding a property will improve rankings. Update log and VideoObject documentation.
Review the visible page first
Our recommendation is to start with the viewer’s experience before editing markup. Can a visitor understand what the video covers, who made it and why it is relevant? Does the page make the video easy to find and use?
- Give each video a descriptive title that matches its actual subject.
- Credit the creator accurately and consistently.
- Write a short explanation of what viewers will learn.
- Provide helpful supporting text, such as a reviewed summary or transcript.
- Check that the embedded player works on mobile.
Then compare the metadata
Have the developer review the existing VideoObject implementation against current documentation. The markup should describe the video actually shown. Do not invent creator details, engagement counts or dates to make the structured data look more complete.
For an illustrative product demonstration, the page could identify the presenter, explain the workflow being demonstrated and link to the relevant service. Its metadata should refer to that same asset, with accurate values that can be maintained as the page changes.
Validate and maintain
Use appropriate validation tools, but distinguish technical validation from eligibility and actual search appearance. Keep a small inventory of video pages, their owners and the last review date. When a video is replaced, revisit the page text and metadata together.
Measure the content’s job
Choose the goal before production: explaining a complex service, answering a recurring question or helping a buyer evaluate an offer. Review the viewer’s next action alongside available discovery data. A technically valid video page can still miss its editorial purpose.
Treat the update as a prompt to improve attribution and consistency across your video library, rather than a reason to add unsupported fields everywhere.
